PHYTOPHTHORA RAMORUM MATING TYPES AND THE POTENTIAL FOR SEXUAL REPRODUCTION:   (WORK PACKAGE 4)

To establish the distribution of A1 and A2 mating types of P. ramorum (up to now A1 predominantly found in Europe, A2 predominantly in the USA) and the potential for mating between P. ramorum A1 and A2.

This will be done by first analysing the mating type of a large sample of isolates (around 200 isolates from Europe and around 50-100 isolates from northern America), developing a speedy, molecular based identification method of mating types, then assessing the functionality of the breeding system by inducing sexual reproduction inbetween P. ramorum and defining the viability and abortion levels in sexually produced oospores.

Experiments have now been undertaken to characterise European and American isolates of P. ramorum, by their morphology and mating behaviour with other Phytophthora species. Results can be found here
