Risk Analysis for Phytophthora ramorum : Objectives

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF PHYTOPHTHORA RAMORUM IN EUROPE:   (WORK PACKAGE 5)

To evaluate the likely environmental and socio-economic impact of P. ramorum.

The likely environmental and socio-economic impact of P. ramorum should it establish in Europe will be described both qualitatively and quantitatively as far as possible. Prediction on the direct economic impact like 'crop' losses, the cost of control measures, losses to rural livelihoods and changes in the aesthetic and environmental quality of affected landscapes will be produced for different scenarios like the case that P. ramorum proves to be damaging to trees or important ecosystems such as heathland and maquis in Europe. On this basis a cost-benefit-analysis of control measures and strategies to prevent the further dispersal of P. ramorum will be conducted.

The requirements for a full economical and environmental impact assessment for P. ramorum has been presented at the International Plant Health Risk Analysis Workshop in Canada (October 2005).
